Avery pulls up...

Yesterday Avery pulled up for the first time. Once she did it she just kept doing it over and over. Now she is trying to pull up on everything. It kind of made me laugh because she pulled up on the exact same toy that Maddy pulled up on for the first time.

She eventually fell and took the toy with her.

Memories: Tales of Toilet Papering...

While growing up I spent a lot of summer weekends having slumber parties with my friends. One of my friends had a trailer that we used to sleep in. Although there was never much sleep going one. There was usually about 4-6 of us girls that would sleep in this trailer and of course we had to toilet paper cute boys houses. There were a few boys that got our toilet paper treatment several times. Coming from a large family my parents used to buy toilet paper by the cases. I know we went through a lot of toilet paper but my mom had to have noticed how fast it was disappearing. There are a few particular times that really stand out...

One particular night(or maybe early morning) us girls went all out. We took 48 rolls of toilet paper and used every last piece. This boy lived clear across town so we walked really fast with our clothes stuffed with toilet paper and would of course try and hide every time we saw a car coming. We even had to sneak through the college campus. We must have looked so ridiculous to the students that saw us. This boy's house was packed with huge trees which we filled with toilet paper. We looped toilet paper back and forth over his house and toilet papered every bush possible. When we left we were quite proud of our masterpiece. Well the following Monday at school he(the boy) asked if we had fun toilet papering his house? We couldn't believe that he knew. Turns out his dad had sat and watched us from their window. I can't believe he let us finish. I guess we must have been pretty entertaining...

Another time that I remember quite well was when I was older(in college) and dating Steve. My best friend and I took a drive to his house(in the next town) after a late night at work and decided to toilet paper it. Well we got caught about half way through because their dogs started barking, so we ran across the street and hid. I don't know if you can really call it hiding because we were just laying on a drive way because that's as far as we got before his mom came out. She wasn't too excited about the situation. She was standing on a chair trying to pull the toilet paper out of the trees in her nightgown and making Steve clean most of it up. I must say it was pretty funny and we were trying so hard not to laugh. We had to lay in that drive way until they got it all cleaned up which took a while. Once they went back in the house we ran about a block to where my car was parked and drove home. Steve pretty much already knew it was us but it was still so worth it..

My most recent experience wasn't quite as fun because we were the ones that got toilet papered. I was about 6 months pregnant with Maddox and had been working late at Lowe's. I got home at about 11:30pm and Steve and a couple friends that he had been out with were already cleaning it up. These kids(we later found out who) did a real doosey of a job as you can see in the pictures above(including the one at the top of the post.) I couldn't believe we got toilet papered because we didn't even have any kids of our own yet. There was all kinds of trash(like pizza boxes), pasta, shredded paper(which was worse than everything else put together because you practically had to pick it up piece by piece) and of course toilet paper all over our yard. Luckily our house is pretty new so our trees aren't that big yet. Anyway I was so exhausted due to working a 12 hour shift and being pregnant that this was the last thing I wanted to deal with. It was so hard to keep bending over to pick up shredded paper because my belly kept getting in the way. We were out there for about 2 hours and Steve finally decided to try and mow up what was left. I'm pretty sure the neighbors weren't too happy about someone mowing their lawn at about 1 in the morning. But if you know my husband he wasn't going to go to bed until it was all cleaned up. I guess you can say what goes around comes around...

Family, Fun and lots of Food...

My sister, brother-in-law and nephew on his blessing day.
So this past weekend was full of family, fun and of course lots of food. My nephew was being blessed on Sunday so my parents and brother came up Saturday morning and spent the day with us and then stayed over night. Now that our basement is finished it was nice having the extra room for company. I think I got the best end of the deal because my mom watched the kids while my dad took me to the Olive Garden for lunch. Of course I had the all you can eat soup, salad and bread sticks. I can assure you that we got our monies worth. Then for dinner my dad grilled us up some rib-eye steaks which were so yummy. One of my sisters came over and ended up staying the night too because she fell asleep on our family room floor. Then all the boys ended up falling asleep trying to watch the Jazz game. My dad and Steve were watching it down stairs and both fell asleep. There is kind of a funny story to go along with this. Earlier in the day when Steve was showing the family our theatre set up in the basement he showed them how he can control the lights with the remote. Well after falling asleep my dad got up to use the bathroom. The bathroom light is a motion light so it goes off after a few seconds if there is no motion. Well my dad thought Steve had woke up and was playing a joke on him and turning the bathroom light off with the remote. My dad came back out of the bathroom and thought to himself -he(Steve)is still pretending like he is asleep(which he really was.) Anyway, thought it was pretty funny. Sunday morning dad made us all french toast and then we headed to my nephews blessing. Steve and Maddy stayed home because Maddy has a really bad cough and fever. Poor little guy-he just isn't his rambunctious self and he just wants us to hold him-he says "hold you" over and over even when you are holding him. The blessing was great and then of course we had lots more yummy food. We had bagels, all kinds of fruit, cookies, pretzels, tons of different cheesecakes, cakes and on and on. Anyway I think I've had enough food to hold me over for a while. Now I need to break in our new gym and start working out. Of course I forgot to take any pictures this weekend. I guess I was too occupied with sick kids and company. But all in all it was a great weekend!

Hey Readers...and Google "Reader"...

First to all the readers out there...I know I don't know some of you but I love getting comments and feedback on my blog. So don't hesitate to leave comments(just try and be nice)-I promise I won't think your some kind of crazy stalker. I also know there are family members reading that don't leave comments. There are a lot of blogs that I read(who I don't know) just because they are fun. I think part of what makes blogging so fun is receiving feedback and leaving feedback. I also enjoy blog-hopping once in a while to find new and interesting blogs. So to all of you that come and read and then sneak away I would love to hear from you...

So I have been using Google "Reader" for a while now and it really saves a lot of time as far as "blog stalking" goes. May be most of you all already know about it but just in case some of you don't I will let you in on the secret. I used to sit and check every ones blog probably every day-sometimes multiple times a day to see if they had a new post. It became very time consuming and somewhat disappointing. Then my sister told me that her friend somehow was notified when people updated their blogs. So I told her to find out how and let me know. Anyway it is called "Google Reader" and it does the blog stalking for you. It is really easy to use. When you first log into your blog(if you are using Google Blogger) your dashboard screen comes up. There is a link on the right side called "My account"(right under your "update profile" link.) Once you click on this a new screen(on the right) all your Google options come up, including Blogger, Gmail, and of course "Reader." Click on "Reader" then on the next screen on the left you can click on "add subscriptions" and input all the blog addresses(I just copy them right out of my browser instead of typing them in.) you want it to track. Then make sure you click on the "update" option(if you click on "all" it will just show all your subscriptions and not just the ones that are updated) and then whenever they update their blog it will list their blog name and how many posts they have that you haven't marked as read. Then you can just click on the link and read their posts or click on their actual blog link(which I like to do) and open up a window to their blog. It is so great! It takes a few minutes to input them all(depending on how many you have) but it is so worth it because it will save you so much time. You can always add more as well. I have also found some other blogs that I like to check that aren't listed under my "Friends & Family" sidebar(because I don't know them) that I have also added to my "Reader" acct. I don't even think you have to have a Google blog-you just have to have a Gmail acct.-you can also access "Reader" from your Gmail screen. The only exceptions that I know of that it doesn't track are private blogs and blogs that don't have a regular blog formats. Anyway just thought I would pass this info. on to any blog newbies like myself or anyone else that didn't already know. If anyone else has any blog "secrets" I would love it if you post them in the comments of this post.

More cute bench pictures...

Sunday Morning...

For the past 4 Sundays Steve has got up with the kids and let me sleep in. I've been sleeping until about 8:45-when Maddy finally comes looking for me. Steve has also made us french toast on all of these Sundays. Any of you that know him very well know this is major-he never cooks, and he can find a way to get almost anyone to cook for him. I keep asking him if something is wrong or if he wants something. He claims he is just trying to be nice and let me sleep. I think he's finally realized after nearly 12 years that everybody will be happier if I get my much needed beauty rest. Well this past Sunday started sweet like the 3 previous Sundays but turned sour pretty quickly...

While I was busy snoozing away Steve was getting the kids up and changing diapers. Well Avery had quite the surprise for him. She had a poopie diaper with the added fun of a "blow out." Surprisingly enough he handled this situation by himself. He was a little grossed out so he held off on making french toast for a while. Once I finally got up I noticed Avery had a rash all over her face. She looked like a 12 year old who had just started going into puberty. She has had a cold that she just can't quite get rid of for about 2 1/2 months. Also the two days prior to Sunday she had a fever. I'm not quite sure what caused the rash yet. Eventually we made our way downstairs because Maddy wanted to watch "Nemo" on the "big tv" downstairs. Shortly after watching Finding Nemo, I snuck away to take a shower. A few minutes later Steve came in holding Avery and she was crying and he proceeded to tell me that she had fell all the way down our stairs and face planted on the tile at the bottom that we just had installed a couple weeks ago. We have been meaning to put up our stair gate now that she's crawling but have had people working in our basement, which is now finished(pictures coming soon), and we had just put it off. Anyway, it is up now. Realizing we weren't going to make it church as a family we got the kids fed and put down for their naps and I went to Relief Society. Shortly after I got home from Relief Society Steve went in to get Avery up from her nap and she had thrown up all over her crib. It was also all over her face, hair and pajamas. We had to completely strip down her bed(including the bed skirt) and wash all her bedding, clean the carpet below her crib and give her a bath. Later that day some kid ran his truck into a parked vehicle across the street from our house which then ran into another parked car. He claimed he dropped his cell phone and tried to pick it up. The vehicles ended up having to be towed. I just had to make mention of that because I guess it wasn't just us having a bad day. Needless to say we had a pretty eventful day. Hopefully next Sunday will go a lot smoother.

Memories: Disastrous "Drive By"...

Ok, so admit it girls...we've all done it...taken a little drive by an old boyfriend or crush's house. Well I admit it, I've done it and one particular time was well, quite disastrous and embarrassing to say the least! The part that is probably the most embarrassing is that I was in college when this happened(you would think I would've outgrown "drive by's" by then.) I had been studying late at the library when on my way home(I still lived at home) I decided to take a "drive by" a guy's house that I had recently stopped dating. We mutually decided to stop dating for reasons that are better kept to myself. Anyway you look at it, he was just bad luck for me! On one of our dates we took a drive up the canyon. Well normally we wouldn't have had any problems but it was early spring and extremely muddy. Well we managed to get his truck stuck in the mud. I know what your thinking...he probably did it on purpose so he could make some kind of a move or something. But we were seriously stuck. We ended up walking down the canyon in the mud and rain to his house. This took us a couple hours. Not to mention that I was wearing shorts and sandals and we didn't get to his house until after 10pm. We caught a lot of flack from his sister who passed us walking home and his truck stayed there for about a month until it was dry enough to have it pulled out. Anyway back to my drive by story(sorry kind of got off on a tangent.) After finally ending a round of "on and off" dating I guess I still wasn't completely over him and took my little "drive by." This is where the story gets a little muddy. I don't remember if I chickened out or if the road was too muddy to continue on but for some reason a few houses away from his house I decided to turn my car around. Well since it was late at night and my night vision isn't the best I turned right into a ditch. That's right I was stuck in a ditch a few houses away from his(If your reading this and you know who I'm talking about please keep it to yourself-you never know who might end up reading this that might know people and on and on) house. My front left tire was in the ditch and the back end of my car was completely off the ground. I tried getting out but just dug myself deeper. It just keeps getting better. This was back before everyone carried cell phones including myself so I had to go to my friends house around the corner and use her phone to call my dad(I'm pretty sure I woke him up) to come rescue me. He came with his truck and chains and pulled me out. I was so embarrassed. I don't even remember what I told my dad-probably that I had been at my friends house(where I had used the phone) and had just taken a wrong turn. To top it off as I was waiting on the corner(between my friends house and my car) for my dad a truck full of guys stopped and asked if I needed a ride somewhere. I thanked them and let them know my ride(left out the dad part) was on his way. Just when you think it couldn't get any worse the parents of THE boy came out of their house to see what was going on. Needless to say that was the last time I drove by his house. Moral of the story, don't drive by an old flame's house unless you are willing to take the risk of getting caught.

Old Favorites with a Makeover...

Here are some of my all time favorite pictures that I gave a makeover in Photoshop...

This is probably my favorite thing in our house even though it sucks up a lot of money and my husbands time...Doesn't it make you want to go scuba diving?

This is my favorite picture of Maddy when he was a baby. The more I look at it the more I realize how much Avery looks like him.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Steve. It was Maddy's first shower. I'm probably going to be in trouble with Steve when he sees this. All I can say is hot! hot! hot!

4/22/07-Avery 12 days old.

This picture is very humbling to me. It is a reminder to me what a miracle Avery is. Just prior to her delivery and while they were resuscitating her I remember instinctively numbing myself and putting up a wall. I think it was my way of preparing myself to be able to cope if she didn't survive or had major long term disabilities. It was so surreal that I kept hoping that it was a nightmare and I would wake up soon. More on her delivery here. You can also read about her 3 month NICU stay here, here, and here..

This is one of Maddy and Avery's first pictures together.

Tutu...

I just love, love, love this picture! Of course my ever so talented sister Jamie made the tutu and the headband. I took the picture in our living room and then played with the lighting to black out the background in Photoshop.

Avery & Shadow...

Avery found her shadow the other day and it was the funniest thing. She would bear crawl as fast as she could following it until she got to the wall. She would then try and grab it. After no luck she would roll away from the wall and start over again. She was going so fast she was panting like she was getting a cardio workout. I must say it was quite entertaining to watch.

Memories: Old Rusty Trike...

I was raised in a small town and I guess you could say we got pretty creative when it came to playing and having fun. I don't remember exactly how old I was but I was young enough to still believe in things that aren't real or even possible. My younger sister had this old orange rusty trike. My neighborhood friend convinced the two of us that we could all take apart this trike and turn it into an enormous airplane. We talked and dreamed about this every day. I think I even literally dreamed about it at night. We talked for hours about what the airplane was going to look like and where we were going to take it and who we would take with us. I TRULY believed this was going to happen. The inside was going to be painted like an enormous rainbow(I can still picture it so vividly.) We were going to leave our families(we debated taking them or not) for a long vacation and fly it to California to meet the guys from the "Dukes of Hazard." We loved that show and had a huge crushes on the boys. The airplane was going to be like a house on wheels and have beds and everything. We were sooooo excited! We gathered up the necessary tools you need to make a airplane like a hammer and nails(if only it were that simple.) We banged away on that thing for several days and never even really got it fully apart. When I think about it I can't believe how convinced I was that our plan was going to work. I was even a little sad that we were going to be leaving our families behind-it felt like we were going to be running away. Sometimes I wish we could be more naive and not so sceptical of life in general as we grow up-but then again I guess that's what life is all about-growing up and learning and everything that comes in between.

My little helper...

Maddy loves to help me clean. He's with me the whole time I'm cleaning the bathrooms and waits until he can flush the toilet after I clean it. He loves to dust with my feather duster and we have to take turns dusting because he is too impatient to wait until I'm done. He likes to sweep and scoop up the dirt with the dust pan. He also likes to help me unload the dishwasher-he gets to put away the tupperware. A few days ago I actually took the cushions off the couch to vacuum underneath them. He insisted that "Maddy clean it." So I let him vacuum while I wiped down the cushions. He did a pretty good job! We found a few of his missing toys as well so he was excited about that.

Avery's 1st Birthday...

Today Avery is one. I can't believe how much can happen in just one year. One year ago today at this time I was 5 1/2 months pregnant and by 6:05pm Avery was born. She has grown and progressed beyond any one's expectations and I am truly blessed for our little "miracle."

My Birthday...

Steve went and picked out flowers and goodies and had them delivered to the house. It's hard to tell in the picture but they are a greenish-yellow color. They are really pretty(yellow is my favorite color of flowers.)

So another year has passed and today I'm 32. I can't believe how time flies as you get older. This past year has been a great year as well as a hard year. Last year my birthday fell on Easter and I was 5 1/2 months pregnant with Avery. Little did I know there were still surprises to come. Two days later on 4/10/07 Avery was born. Her early arrival turned our world upside down and I am so grateful for how well she is doing now-nearly a year later. We will probably be celebrating our birthdays together in the years to come.

Nap Time or Playtime?

Maddy is always excited when Avery wakes up in the morning or wakes up from her naps. As soon as he hears her he says "Avery's awake" and rushes into her room(sometimes sooner than I want him too.) They start giggling back and forth and playing peek-a-boo under her crib bumper. It is really cute.
"Peek-a-boo"

Lately he has been trying to get her out himself. I keep explaining that he's too little but he tries anyway.

Memories: Daddy/Daughter Dates...

While growing up my Dad would take turns taking out each of us girls on Daddy/Daughter Dates. We usually got to pick where we wanted to go. I would usually choose to go to "The Malt Shop" in my hometown of Ephraim, Utah, which I later worked at for 6 years. I would always get a bubble gum ice cream cone, on a sugar cone of course. We all loved bubble gum ice cream and sometimes my mom would buy one of the big tubs from the owner so we could have it at home to. I don't know why I liked it so much because the gum in it is pretty disgusting and dissolves in your mouth. The date that I probably remember the most was going to the "Bowling Alley." There were a lot of arcade games and air hockey tables. This particular time my dad gave me a whole roll of quarters to play games with. Anyone that knows my dad knows this is a big deal because he is quite the penny pincher(luv ya dad.) We also played air hockey together which was fun as well but I was always afraid the puck was going to fly off the table and hit me. It was so much fun!

Praise To The Man!

Thomas S. Monson

I am so grateful that President Monson is the new leader of our church. He is truly a man of God whom I have grown to love and respect over the years. He has always been one of my favorite General Authorities. I had the privilege of meeting and shaking his hand in 2002. My great-grandmother Helena McKinnon was among those being honored as a Centenarian in Utah. She was 105 at the time and lived to be 106. President Monson as well as numerous family members attended a gathering in her honor. It was at this time that I met him. I had always admired him from afar and was filled with respect after meeting him. I remember that he was very large in stature and had large hands. He was very personable and genuine. He had such an aura about him that you just knew he was a man of God. Hearing him speak in conference on Sunday reaffirmed what I already knew, that he is suppose to be our prophet right now. He spoke with such conviction and love.

In Loving Memory...

Gordan B. Hinckley

June 23, 1910-January 27, 2008

I just adored this man! He always had such a sparkle in his eye and such an endearing sense of humor. He was such a compassionate and loving man. He had such a love for all people and traveled the world to be among the people of the church. He was such a great ambassador and dedicated nearly his entire life to the church. He had a way of saying things that made everything so simple. He was so strong and healthy and did more at 97 than most half his age. I have so much love and respect for President Hinckley. I will truly miss this man and his cute little "cane" wave.

Our New Hair Stylist...

I was busy blogging yesterday(go figure) and I guess Maddy got a little too bored. He came running in the room pointing at his hair saying "Mommy, look, so cute!" I looked at his hair and there were big globs of something slimy looking(kind of like snot) all over in it. I had no idea what it was because he didn't have anything in his hands. I asked him what it was and he said "gel." I told him to show me and he ran into Avery's room and grabbed the very slimy tube of A&D diaper rash ointment. His hair looked so disgusting and I didn't have time to bathe him so I tried to rinse it out in the sink with soap. Well that didn't work at all so I just styled it like I would if he had real gel in it. It was just extra shiny and a bit greasy. We went to Wal Mart and I actually got comments from 3 different people that his hair was so cute. I just kind of smiled and said thanks. I bathed him last night and still couldn't get it all out. When he got up today his hair was still perfectly styled and in place. Anyway, thought it was pretty funny. You never know, he just might be on to a new kind of hair product...

Here is a closer view of his masterpiece...

"The Smell Of Rain"

My sister sent me this story a while ago and I just barely read it(thanks Jen.) It is a true story. It gave me chills and really hit home. I think you will understand why after you read it...

"THE SMELL OF RAIN"

A cold March wind danced around the dead of night in Dallas as the doctor walked into the small hospital room of Diana Blessing. She was still groggy from surgery. Her husband, David, held her hand as they braced themselves for the latest news. That afternoon of March 10, 1991, complications had forced Diana, only 24-weeks pregnant, to undergo an emergency Cesarean to deliver the couple's new daughter, Dana Lu Blessing. At 12 inches long and weighing only one pound nine ounces, they already knew she was perilously premature. Still, the doctor's soft words dropped like bombs. 'I don't think she's going to make it,' he said, as kindly as he could. 'There's only a 10-percent chance she will live through the night, and even then, if by some slim chance she does make it, her future could be a very cruel one' Numb with disbelief, David and Diana listened as the doctor described the devastating problems Dana would likely face if she survived. She would never walk, she would never talk, she would probably be blind, and she would certainly be prone to other catastrophic conditions from cerebral palsy to complete mental retardation, and on and on. 'No! No!' was all Diana could say. She and David, with their 5-year-old son Dustin, had long dreamed of the day they would have a daughter to become a family of four. Now, within a matter of hours, that dream was slipping away But as those first days passed, a new agony set in for David and Diana. Because Dana's underdeveloped nervous system was essentially 'raw', the lightest kiss or caress only intensified her discomfort, so they couldn't even cradle their tiny baby girl against their chests to offer the strength of their love. All they could do, as Dana struggled alone beneath the ultraviolet light in the tangle of tubes and wires, was to pray that God would stay close to their precious little girl. There was never a moment when Dana suddenly grew stronger. But as the weeks went by, she did slowly gain an ounce of weight here and an ounce of strength there. At last, when Dana turned two months old, her parents were able to hold her in their arms for the very first time. And two months later, though doctors continued to gently but grimly warn that her chances of surviving, much less living any kind of normal life, were next to zero, Dana went home from the hospital, just as her mother had predicted. Five years later, when Dana was a petite but feisty young girl with glittering gray eyes and an unquenchable zest for life. She showed no signs whatsoever of any mental or physical impairment. Simply, she was everything a little girl can be and more. But that happy ending is far from the end of her story. One blistering afternoon in the summer of 1996 near her home in Irving, Texas, Dana was sitting in her mother's lap in the bleachers of a local ball park where her brother Dustin's baseball team was practicing. As always, Dana was chattering nonstop with her mother and several other adults sitting nearby when she suddenly fell silent Hugging her arms across her chest, little Dana asked, 'Do you smell that?' Smelling the air and detecting the approach of a thunderstorm, Diana replied, 'Yes, it smells like rain.' Dana closed her eyes and again asked, 'Do you smell that?' Once again, her mother replied, 'Yes, I think we're about to get wet. It smells like rain.' Still caught in the moment, Dana shook her head, patted her thin shoulders with her small hands and loudly announced, 'No, it smells like Him. It smells like God when you lay your head on His chest.' Tears blurred Diana's eyes as Dana happily hopped down to play with the other children. Before the rains came, her daughter's words confirmed what Diana and all the members of the extended Blessing family had known, at least in their hearts, all along. During those long days and nights of her first two months of her life, when her nerves were too sensitive for them to touch her, God was holding Dana on His chest and it is His loving scent that she remembers so well.

Dust, Dust, Dust!

We are in the process of having our basement finished. I absolutely love how it is turning out and everything is coming together. There is going to be a theatre/family room/wet bar/game area, which is going to be fabulous, designated gym equipped with built in speakers and ipod dock and of course workout equipment(I will no longer have an excuse for not working out), 2 bedrooms(one of which we will probably use as our office and the other a guest bedroom), and of course a bathroom. Although I am so excited about it I feel like all I do is dust, dust, dust. I kept up with the housework for a while but then I got tired of dusting and cleaning the floors nearly every day. So I kind of gave up a little and let my house go. Being introduced to the blog world didn't help in the housework department either(although I do love it.) Our basement is nearly finished and I'm trying to get back on track with my housework. Here are a few shots of the early stages of the basement. I will post finished basement pictures hopefully in about two weeks(knock on wood).
